Another franchise spin-off arrives at the box office as Warner Bros. assembles Ocean’s 8 [OCEN4] with a new all-female main cast. Sandra Bullock [SBULL] stars as the sister of Danny Ocean from the original trilogy who brings together a crew to heist the Met Gala in New York City. Ocean’s 8 comes 11 years after the last film Ocean’s 13 debuted with $36.1 million. The female remake of Ghostbusters managed a $46 million opening despite a male nerd rage. There’s been little backlash with Ocean’s 8, which should bring back older fans, as well as connect with a new younger and more female crowd. Scoping out 4145 theaters, Ocean’s 8 may score $40 million.
Heading into its third weekend, Solo: A Star Wars Story [SWAR2] looks to decay another 50% to about $14.5 million.
The R-rated horror film Hereditary [HERDT] premiered at Sundance to positive reception. The buzz and reviews have remained strong. A24 has crediblity with the audience that opened The Witch in 2046 theaters to $8.8 million during February 2016. Hereditary is getting 2964 theaters and could reach $13 million.
The R-rated actioner Hotel Artemis [ARTMS] stars Jodie Foster [JFOST] as a nurse who runs a hospital for criminals. Global Road targets male action fans that enjoyed John Wick, but Foster is not Keanu Reeves. Hotel Artemis may admit $7.5 million from 2407 locations.
!--[if gte mso 9] Adrift [ADRFT] should be able to hold 60% of its opening for a second weekend around $7 million. That’s the whisper on the virtual trading floor.
