The summer movie season wraps up over the Labor Day holiday weekend with Crazy Rich Asians [CRASN] holding strong at an unprecedented level. Crazy Rich Asians will race past $100 million over the 4-day weekend with around $28 million.
The Meg [MEG] looks to swallow another $11 million and surpass $120 million.
Operation Finale [OPFIN] chronicles the real-life hunt of a Nazi war criminal. To get the buzz started, MGM opened the PG-13 rated film on Wednesday, earning $1 million. Operation Finale could unlock $8 million over the long weekend from 1818 theaters.
After averaging over $40K in 9 theaters last weekend, Searching [SARCH] expands wide to 1207 theaters. The PG-13 rated thriller has excellent reviews and positive word of mouth. The John Cho [JCHO] starrer could also benefit from the same grassroot support as Crazy Rich Asians. Searching may download $6.5 million over the holiday weekend.
The R-rated comedy The Happytime Murders [HPTMR] is likely to lose steam quickly in its second weekend with about $5.5 million through Monday.
Lionsgate targets teenage sci-fi fans with the PG-13 rated Kin [KIN]. Unfortunately, it comes on the heels of similar, underperformers A.X.L. and The Darkest Minds. With little buzz and poor reviews, Kin may not top $5 million over the long weekend.
That’s the whisper on the virtual trading floor.
