Delivering a new opening weekend best for The Conjuring franchise, The Nun [THNUN] topped the box office with an estimated $53.5 million. The horror prequel also became the second biggest September opener and second biggest R-rated debut, both behind last year's It. The audience was 51% male and 44% aged 25 years or older.
Crazy Rich Asians [CRASN] slipped to second for the first time to $13.6 million, bringing its total to $136.2 million.
Peppermint [PPRMN] debuted at the third spot with $13.3 million. The femme-actioner skewed 56% female and 78% aged 25 and over.
In fifth place, Searching [SARCH] declined just 26% in its second wide weekend to $4.5 million. The online thriller has earned $14.3 million.
Operation Finale [OPFIN] dropped 49% to $3.0 million and eighth overall. $14.1 million. The historical thriller has banked $14.1 million.
God Blessed the Broken Road [GBTBR] opened with just $1.6 million.
