After its record haul at the box office table last weekend, Joker [JOKER] will continue to have the winning hand for a second consecutive tournament. A year ago, Venom dropped 56% in its second weekend. With much better reviews and Oscar buzz, Joker should be able to hold better near 48% for a sophomore session around $46 million.
Will Smith faces off against a younger Will Smith in Gemini Man [GEMAN]. The project had been in development for decades before technology finally caught. Director Ang Lee has pushed the envelope in creating a completely CG Will Smith while shooting at the highest framerate and resolution possible. However, reviews for the PG-13 rated film are trending negative. Smith’s last original sci-fi film After Earth debuted at $27.5 million May 2013. Gemini Man looks to land similarly at about $27 million from 3642 theaters.
The Addams Family [ADDAM] returns in an animated feature from MGM. Paramount produced two live-action adaptations during the 1990s. Fans who remember those films as well as the catchy theme song now have their own families. Playing in 4007 theaters, The Addams Family could snap $26.5 million.
With competition for the family audience, Abominable [EVERS] may settle for $6.0 million during its third outing.
Lionsgate targets moviegoers looking for a laugh for the R-rated comedy Jexi [LEXI]. Unfortunately, the cast led by Adam Devine lacks any starpower. Jexi may earn $5.5 million from 2332 locations.
That’s the whisper on the virtual trading floor.
