There is romance, suspense and thrills at the box office this weekend. Cameron Diaz [CDIAZ] and Tom Cruise [TCRUI] bring their collective wit and chemistry to the romance-thriller Knight and Day [KNDAY]. Audiences are in for a treat.
Directed by James Mangold [JMANG], Knight and Day starts out as what looks like a typical romance. June, played by Diaz, meets a charming man named Roy, played by Cruise, in the airport waiting area. She ends up on the same flight as Roy who is actually a secret agent. He fights off bad guys on the plane and sweeps June up in an adventure around the world. Even though the plot is simple enough, what sets this film apart from other girl-meets-boy-who-is-more-than-meets-the-eye story is the breezy chemistry between its two leads. They inject more personality into the story than the actual plot itself.
Known for her comedic timing, Diaz adds a dose of believability mixed with light-heartedness. While no circumstance gets emotionally heavy, there remains a dire sense of danger. Her wide-eyed humor is goofy but never gets ditzy or clumsy. When a woman is trying to cope with the outrageous situations she is thrown into, one can usually expect some awkwardness. Diaz of course makes it all look easy and beautiful.
Cruise gets to be his vintage crazy self that he first showcased in Jerry Maguire. Roy’s charm leads our heroine into ever dangerous circumstances. The crazy look in his eye offset with a calm demeanor keeps one guessing as to his true motive. Is he the good guy he claims to be or is June running around with a psychopath adept at killing people? One never quiet knows, but with their flirtatious banter, it doesn’t really matter since they are so good together.
The supporting cast includes Peter Sarsgaard [PSARS], Viola Davis [VDAVI] and Marc Blucas [MBLUC]. Knight and Day succeeds as the sexy espionage thriller it set out to be. For some good light-hearted fun and action thrills, check out the film this weekend.
