Super Bowl weekend this year kicks off two new releases that serves as counter-programming for female moviegoers. However, neither films have gained much traction. Bad Boys for Life [BADB3] will remain threepeat champion with around $16 million.
1917 [1917] is likely remain the runner-up again with $10 million as it closes in on $120 million.
Blake Lively toplines the R-rated actioner The Rhythm Section [RHYTM], which is Eon Production’s attempt to start a female-led franchise alongside their 007. Unfortunately, Paramount’s marketing has failed to generate much buzz. Playing in 3049 theaters, The Rhythm Section could hit $8.0 million.
Gretel & Hansel [GRHNS] is the fourth horror film of the month as Orion Films courts the same young female demographic that didn’t turn out for The Turning nor Underwater. The PG-13 rated Gretel & Hansel is likely to do similar with about $7.5 million from 3007 locations.
Despite poor reviews, Dolittle [DOCDO] has held up better than expected. The family film could score another $7 million.
The Gentlemen [TOFFG] is adding around 500 theaters in its second session, which should help the crime comedy hold 60% of its debut at $6.5 million.
That’s the whisper on the virtual trading floor.
