With the Academy Awards ceremony on Sunday, only one new film opens in wide release this weekend. Up for an Oscar for Bombshell, Margot Robbie reprises her role as Harley Quinn in Birds of Prey [GOTCS], an R-rated spin-off of the PG-13 rated The Suicide Squad which opened to $133.7 million, but faded quickly August of 2016. Warner Bros. decided to have Harley Quinn lead a new superheroine team that includes The Huntress and Black Canary. Birds of Prey is the first comic book movie since the R-rated Joker debuted last October at $96.2 million. Depsite their comic relationship, the two films are not set in the same universe. With its theme of female empowerment, Birds of Prey has turned off some male comic fans. Then again, Captain Marvel proved those doubters wrong. Birds of Prey has excellent reviews with a RottenTomatoes score that nearly match Wonder Woman as the best in DCEU. Circling 4236 theaters, Birds of Prey could grab $56 million.
Bad Boys for Life [BADB3] has shown excellent legs for a sequel as a $9.5 million fourth weekend would take the film near $165 million.
1917 [1917.BW] targets third place with around $5.5 million, which should hold off Dolittle [DOCDO] at about $4.5 million.
The horror film Gretel & Hansel [GRHNS] is likely to tumble 55% in its second weekend to $2.8 million.
