Kevin Smith's rise to fame is well-known among would-be filmmakers: the young writer-director took several credit card cash advances, hustled a small sum of money, and put together Clerks, a low-budget feature that wowed the critics at the 1994 Sundance Film Festival. While Clerks made Smith an overnight celebrity, his follow-up feature, 1995's Mallrats, was an unabashed bomb. Smith would regroup, however. His third effort, 1997's Chasing Amy, was a mature and funny look at 1990s relationships. A critical success, the film also grossed over $12 million on a meager $250,000 budget. This was followed by Dogma, his big-budget feature with Matt Damon and Ben Affleck.
