Dogma is the fourth effort from writer-director Kevin Smith, and because of its religious nature, has engendered a mild pre-release controversy. The film focuses on a former Catholic named Bethany (Linda Fiorentino) who must save humanity from two renegade angels (Matt Damon and Ben Affleck). Several religious characters make appearances in the film, including God (Alanis Morisette) and a thirteenth apostle named Rufus (Chris Rock). Of course, no Smith film would be complete without an appearance from Silent Bob and Jay (Smith and Jason Mewes). Although Miramax will distribute the film overseas, the Brothers Weinstein will avoid any domestic backlash by letting Lions Gate distribute the film for the U.S. release. Miramax adopted a similar strategy with 1995's Kids, releasing the NC-17 film under its Shining Excaliber moniker.
