Two new films will play the weekend box office game, but neither will knock off Sonic the Hedgehog [SONIC] from the high score. The family-friendly Sonic the Hedgehog should hold around 55% of its debut for another $32 million.
The classic Jack London novel The Call of the Wild [TCOTW] gets another feature adaptation, this time with a CG dog. The PG-rated adventure is the first release under Disney’s rebrand of Fox as 20th Century Studios. Star Harrison Ford has been hitting the talk show circuit to promote the family film. Showing in 3752 theaters, The Call of the Wild could pull in $18 million.
Birds of Prey [GOTCS] looks to catch another $8 million for its third outing.
Katie Holmes joins the PG-13 rated sequel Brahms: The Boy 2 [TBOY2]. Although The Boy opened to $10.8 million during January of 2016, the sequel doesn’t appear to be anything but a cash grab from STX. The horror genre also has underperformed thus far in 2020. Brahms: The Boy 2 may gross $7.0 million from 2151 theaters.
The Photograph [PHOTO] looks to hold about 55% for a sophomore session at $6.5 million. On the other hand, Blumhouse’s Fantasy Island [FANIS] is likely to tumble 60% in its second weekend to $5 million.
That’s the whisper on the virtual trading floor.
