Halloween is typically dead at movie theaters as people go trick-or-treating and costume-partying. This year won't be any better even as the COVID-19 pandemic has curtailed most of the festivities. Focus Features hopes some moviegoers will check out a horror film instead. Come Play [LARRY] centers on an autistic boy who is haunted by a monster through electronic devices. The PG-13 rated film targets teenagers, a demographic that has not return en masse to theaters. Showing in 2183 theaters, Come Play could gather $3.0 million.
Second place should be a close race between the third weekend of Honest Thief [HNSTF] and the fourth weekend of The War with Grandpa [WARGP], each with around $1.4 million.
The horror film The Empty Man [EMPTY] may be able to hold about 50% of its opening for $700K in its second weekend.
Paramount dumps its R-rated thriller Spell [SPELL] into 369 theaters, where the voodoo film could pin $300K.
That’s the whisper from the virtual trading floor.
