Hello HSX Community!
Here’s some movies coming to streaming this month that I liked and hope you do too!
COMING TO VOD
-
POSSESSOR (11/6) - One of my favorite films this year. It’s Brendan Cronenberg’s (yeah, he is David’s son) second feature and it plays around with the idea of being an imposter in your own body. In this film, identity theft takes on a new meaning as corporate assassins can virtually take over other people to carry out their kills. It’s got an extreme amount of violence so if that's not your thing, you’ll want to skip this. [POSSR]
-
PROXIMA (11/6) - A down to Earth (literally) space drama about Sarah (the always amazing Eva Green), a woman training to go to space while she balances motherhood and an occupation that’s dominated by men (including Matt Dillon) who would rather not make room for females in space. Alice Winocour’s third film moves along at a brisk pace so all THE RIGHT STUFF space training parts are exciting and the mother-daughter parts are given equal weight so we know that everything Sarah is training to do will take her away from the best thing on the planet. [PRXMA]
-
COLLECTIVE (11/20) - After a horrible and fatal club fire in Romania, the press goes beyond the corrupt government to uncover not just failings with the fire itself, but with substandard care in hospitals that led to even more deaths. One of the year's best documentaries that's just too challenging for the academy to recognize, but nonetheless, a powerful testament to the power of journalism against a failed government.
COMING TO NETFLIX
-
FRUITVALE STATION (11/12) - Haven’t seen Ryan Coogler’s impressive debut? Now here’s your chance.
COMING TO HULU
-
BROADCAST NEWS (11/1) - William Hurt, Albert Brooks & Holly Hunter in James L Brook’s perfect satire of network news. This is one of my go to comfort movies because it's hilarious, sexy and smart.
-
CRIMSON TIDE (11/1) - Tony Scott, Don Simpson & Jerry Bruckheimer’s thrilling submarine thriller with Denzel Washington and Gene Hackman. Powerhouse performances and edge of your seat tension. I watch this movie once a year.
-
THE GIRL NEXT DOOR (11/11) I probably like this movie more than I should. I certainly like it more than the set up as Elisha Cuthbert plays the-only-can-happen-in-a-movie titular character who just happens to be a porn star. Crazy thing, the film actually works because it’s got a great heart and Timothy Olyphant is perfect as her producer/boyfriend/life coach to Emile Hirsch as the lead who (SURPRISE) falls in love with her in five seconds. This movie bombed at the box office and got mixed reviews, but I find it funny, touching and surprising.
COMING TO CRITERION CHANNEL
-
DIABOLIQUE (11/2) - Alfred Hitchcock loved this movie so much it made him make VERTIGO. If it’s good enough for Hitch, it’s good enough for you.
-
VICTORIA (11/24) - You say the words “the film is one shot,” and that’s enough to stop most people in their tracks and entice them to see whatever film you’re talking about.. VICTORIA, however, is much more than that one accomplishment. It’s a collusion of great technical skill and breathtaking emotional performance that make it one of the great discoveries of recent memory. Don’t miss it.
