The first weekend of May is normally the start of the summer blockbuster movie season. However, previously scheduled Black Widow bolted for July, leaving a void for MGM/UA to fill with Wrath of Man [VGLNC]. The R-rated actioner reunites Jason Statham with Guy Ritchie, the director who started his acting career in 1999’s Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. A remake of a French film, Wrath of Man should appeal to their older male fanbase. Ritchie’s last film The Gentlemen debuted just before the pandemic in January 2020 to $10.65 million from 2165 theaters. With newly reopened theaters starved for new content, Wrath of Man is booked in 2876 locations and could rake in $11 million.
Demon Slayer The Movie: Mugen Train [DSMMT] and Mortal Kombat [MK3] will continue to duel for a third weekend with both likely to score around $3.2 million.
Last week’s lone wide opener Separation [SEPRT] is poised to tumble a horrific 55% to about $800K.
Sony drops dumps another one of its small movie, Here Today [HTODA], in theaters at the last moment. Billy Crystal directed the PG-13 rated comedy and stars with Tiffany Haddish. Playing in approximately 1000 theaters, Here Today may be gone tomorrow with $750K.
That’s the whisper from the virtual trading floor.
