Disney’s “experiment” of a traditional theatrical window was an overwhelming success as Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings [SHCHI] banked $75.5 million over the 3-day weekend and an estimated $90.0 million over the 4-day holiday weekend. The opening nearly tripled the previous Labor Day record of $30.6 million set by 2017’s Halloween. An Asian male actor proved capable of leading a blockbuster which attracted an audience that was 61% males and 51% under the age of 25. Shang-Chi received an A CinemaScore.
Candyman [CNDYM] declined 53% from its debut to $10.2 million over the 3-day portion of the weekend. The horror film brought in $12.8 million over 4 days to bring its total to $41.3 million.
Free Guy [FREEG] scored another $11.2 million over the long weekend for a total of $94.3 million after 4 weekends.
PAW Patrol: The Movie [PAWPT] nabbed $5.2 million over the holiday weekend. The animated film has barked up $31.5 million after 3 weekends.
Don’t Breathe 2 [DNBR2] grossed another $2.8 million over 4 days and a fourth weekend total at $28.5 million.
