The boundary of live-action 3D film is pushed where it’s never gone before by the extreme stunts in the third installment of Jackass 3D [JCKA3]. The first featured version of the MTV series grossed $22.8 million in 2002, while the sequel reached $29.0 million in 2006. The Jackass fanbase is unlikely to have grown since the last movie as its targeted young male audience matured. Opening in 3081 theaters, Jackass 3D could muster about $27 million with the help of the 3D surcharge.
Summit has assembled its own a-team of expendable losers with Red [RED1]. The PG-13 rated actioner skews towards older males with its cast of Bruce Willis [BWILL], Helen Mirren [HMIRR], Morgan Freeman [MFREE] and John Malkovich [JMALK]. With well-cut trailers and good reviews, Red could be green with $18 million from 3255 theaters.
The popularity of The Social Network [SOCIL] has not waned as the Oscar-buzzed drama should invite another $10 million.
Life As We Know It [LAWKI] didn’t prove popular with moviegoers. With mixed reviews, the romantic comedy may decay 45% to around $8 million.
Secretariat [SCTRT] stumbled out of the opening gates, but could pick up the pace in its second weekend. The sports drama should tail off less than 40% to $7 million.
That’s the whisper from the trading floor.
