Debuting with the highest opening of the year, the animated/live-action comedy Hop [IHOP] gathered an estimated $38.1 million. The strong showing was fueled by the notorious hard to track families with young children, which made up 75% of the audience. With another three weeks until Easter, the film should continue to out-perform.
The sci-fi thriller Source Code [SCODE] generated $15.1 million to open in second place. Though the audience was split evenly between males and females, they did not enjoy the film as much as the critics.
FilmDistrict scored a breakout hit with their first release Insidous [NSIDI], which took third with $13.5 million. The horror film was produced for les than $2 million.
Last weekend's number one film, Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Roderick Rules [WIMP2] dropped 57% to $10.2 million. Sucker Punch [SUCKP] took an even bigger fall, tumbling 68% to $6.1 million in its second frame.
