Springng the box office forward with the biggest opening of the year so far, Rio [RIO] booked an estimated $40.0 million to dominate the weekend. The 3D animated film attracted a broad audience that should keep Rio the number one choice for families for weeks to come.
Scream 4 [SCRM4] finished a distant second with an underwhelming $19.3 million. The sequel failed to match the opening of previous entires in the horror franchise by not attracting younger moviegoers.
After two weeks at the top, Hop [IHOP] bounced to the third spot with $11.2 million. The family film sits on $82.8 million.
The inspirational Soul Surfer [SOSRF] trailed off just 30% in its second weekend to place fourth at $7.4 million. Fellow sophomore films Hanna [HANA1] declined 41% to $7.3 million while Arthur [ATHUR] dropped 43% to $6.9 million.
Debuting ninth overall, The Conspirator [CNSPR] grossed $3.9 million for a respectable $5,550 per theater average. The historical drama should hold well due to its mature adult target audience.
