As this weekend’s holiday approaches, the nation gets ready to celebrate with barbecues, picnics and fireworks. Hollywood always has special plans for the country every 4th of July. I have watched aliens blow up the White House in Independence Day and seen Tom Cruise protect his family from them in War of the Worlds. Transformers stormed the country, Peter Parker went on his second adventure in Spider-Man 2 and Will Smith had to cope with being a superhero in last year’s Hancock.
This year, the weekend is less extraterrestrial and more earthbound. Johnny Depp [JDEPP] and Christian Bale [CBALE] star in Public Enemies [PUBNM]. Depp plays John Dillinger to Bale’s Melvin Purvis, the FBI agent who eventually brought the troublemaker down. As slick as it looks, Public Enemies is the second choice for this movie-goer. My eyes will be fixed on the dynamic trio of Manny, Diego and Sid who are back for another adventure in the Prehistoric wonderland Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaur [ICEA3].
The original film in the franchise came out in 2002 with memorable CG animation and an endearing story about a lovable sloth, a woolly mammoth and a saber-tooth tiger returning a lost human child. The film received an Oscar nomination for Best Animated feature that year.
The sequel Ice Age: Meltdown came in 2006 topping its predecessor in quality. The story moved along with Manny finding more Mammoth friends and the gang dealing with an environmental threat in the form of a melting glacier.
Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaur should be a wonderful addition to the other two. This story features danger in the form of Dinosaurs, which should have died out hundreds of millions years before. The film is released in digital 3-D, giving its already superb animation a twist. For those of you who enjoyed the first two, Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs is the film to see this weekend.
