Even though the animated sequel was the worst reviewed film in Pixar's 25-year history, moviegoers drove Cars 2 [CARS2] to an estimated $68.0 million opening weekend. The debut bested the original Cars' $60 million in 2006. Families made up a majority of the audience, and preferred 2D over 3D at 60% to 40% of the receipts, the lowest split so far since the 3D fad began. Like all Pixar films, Cars 2 should enjoy a long summer stay.
The R-rated comedy Bad Teacher [BDTCH] debuted in second with a better than expected $31.0 million. Cameron Diaz [CDIAZ] and her co-stars attracted a crowd that was 63% female.
Last weekend's top film Green Lantern [GLANT] crashed 65% to $18.4 million. The DC superhero stands at $89.3 million.
In fourth place, Super 8 [SUPR8] added another $12.1 million to bring its total to $95.2 million.
Mr. Popper's Penguins [POPNG] rounded out the top five at $10.3 million. The family film declined 44% in its second session.
