The wizardry magic of Harry Potter was no match for the superpower of Captain America: The First Avenger [CAPAM] which earned an estimated $65.8 million to top the weekend box office. The opening matched the $65.7 million debut of Marvel stablemate Thor. Captain America attracted an audience that was 64% males and 57% over the age of 25.
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2 [HPOT8] tumbled a whopping 72% in its second weekend to $48.0 million. Even without crossing over to non-fans, the final film has already accumulated $274.2 million.
Friends with Benefits [FWBFT] opened in third place with $18.5 million. The second R-rated comedy about causal sex this year did less than the $19.7 million of the first, No Strings Attached. The film appealed to women who made up 62% of the audience.
