The 3D reissues are like small studio releases...
I've no idea how much post converting to 3D costs, but imagine that when you originate in computer animation it is significantly cheaper than doing it to a film. Add on the advertising, digital print distribution etc and you are probably looking at $20m minimum to get it out there.
I think what Disney in particular are looking at is a way to generate increased revenue and secure screens from their reissue program. It's a tactic that will continue to work as you can create event status around the 3D element, plus you then have materials for a higher priced 3D home ent release. The entire Pixar catalogue is ripe for this, but there are only so many Disney classics you could do this to - would Lilo and Stitch really be worth the expenditure?
