I watched the five one-minute clips for LESMS posted at CS a couple of days ago...

... and I thought the use of close-ups and the on-stage long-take singing strategy were aimed at fostering intimacy; the trouble is that the resulting singing style, at least as represented in these five clips (for the most part), is an anti-theatrical style: it's unsustained. Final notes taper immediately, instead of continuing to ring. Where there would have been a complete sound in a theatre, there is a kind of tuned muttering. This might also turn out to be... um... pleasant, but it is not the pleasure that seeing the musical in person generates. I hope it wasn't the style sought in order to overcome the objections of people who don't like singing, i.e., "make it more speech like, so it will appeal to a wider audience, and not alienate people who don't like song."

Reading the reviews of LESMS that are trickling out, many of them seem to be by reviewers who perhaps have not seen the musical on stage. Paul2k Dec 06, 16:27
