I say that there is no "best documentary" of the last century. For folks that really love this stuff, why bother with best and worst?

I want more. I love documentary filmmakeing and I don't want weird infighting and politics to slow it down. I realize that awards ceremonies are about rewarding things to people but when you are talking about an art form that is always on the fringe of popular culture, I don't feel like there are any losers.

This is, bar none, my favorite type of film, and I hope that these often silly competitions don't dissuade future filmmakers from continuing to make these films. Mosreso than regular flicks, Docs have a fan base that will try "new things" (ie. watch something that they were not previously interested in just because they want to see a good doc). I worry that sometimes the award stuff takes the attention away from the many interesting optioins rather than highlight the few that do it the best.

Maybe this all sounds stupid, but it does come from the heart. This is an art that I would hate to see diminish and I may not be the best at articulating that, but I hope that the small talent pool that seems to constantly be fighting over so few awards does not get smaller just based on these somewhat overvalued awards.

Hmmm. THEGUARDIAN: 'The Act Of Killing': Don't Give An OSCAR To This Snuff Movie. RotoHockeyYTD2014 Feb 22, 21:46

its a hit piece. this is written by a friend of the director of the square and wants the square to win. {nm} Moviesnob Feb 22, 22:00

they made these movies together. He is clearly biased and hopes in influence voters. He also has a history with both Josh and Werner Herzog Moviesnob Feb 22, 22:02

That is ironic since there is plenty of violence in The Square. {nm} thatpj Feb 22, 23:40

FWIW, Gold Derby (Handicapping) has The Act of Killing at 6/5, 20 Feet from Stardom at 8/5. The Square is 3rd but at a higher 15/2. So... KalElFan Feb 23, 07:36

These mean nothing. {nm} Moviesnob Feb 23, 10:27

Well, if handicapping / odds meant nothing, 100/1 longshots would be as likely to win as 1/5 uber-favorites. We'd all be rich! :-) {nm} KalElFan Feb 23, 10:51

Gold Derby means nothing, not handicapping. Oscar season is full of predictions, this one is just the LA Time's version. Moviesnob Feb 23, 11:00

New thread above -- professional handicapping actually has The Square about the same and The Act of Killing an even bigger favorite. Also... KalElFan Feb 23, 11:49

What an atrocity of an article. The Act Of Killing is the best documentary i've seen in at least this century. {nm} Filmstardust Feb 22, 23:30

And what was the best in the last century. {nm} RotoHockeyYTD2014 Feb 22, 23:51

Could be "Shoah," or "Night and Fog," or "Medium Cool," or "Triumph of the Will," or "Hoop Dreams," or "Burden of Dreams". . . second gary Feb 23, 10:39

Then you have not seen The Cove {nm} ankurbe Feb 23, 00:52

+1. {nm} RotoHockeyYTD2014 Feb 23, 00:58

The second he started using loaded terms like snuff was the second I stopped reading. {nm} numbersix_99 Feb 23, 04:32
