Movies

yes, they (thus far) have proved to be a mostly safe, winning bet, in hindsight. other safe bets: Gravity, Argo, American Hustle

Posted by: charlie (a.k.a mickpix) on Oct 16, 10:22 in response to RogerMore's post It's not about courage, it's about money. There are...

Ted, Inception, etc.

But it took actual courage from the execs and studios to greenlight the latter group, to put their asses and jobs on the line. Ā

I know which ones I would rather pay my $14 to see

DL: actual Latino writer/director sees comic book movies as "poison" and "cultural genocide" (don't tell DMac) charlie Oct 15, 17:55

And? One man's opinion speaks for an entire minority? What? {nm} Antibody Oct 15, 18:02

no, but it raises the valid question of why anyone (minority or otherwise) would want to participate in an artistically bankrupt genre charlie Oct 15, 18:26

"art" is subjective. I wouldnt call Babel art. I wouldnt call Birdman art. But thats just my opinion. Moviesnob Oct 15, 18:36

I mean Robert Redford was in Captain America for moses sakes. He's done a lot for art. More than maybe a handful {nm} Moviesnob Oct 15, 18:38

Babel is an awful movie. Haven't seen Birdman yet. It's an interesting point re superhero movies although it's hardly... numbersix_99 Oct 16, 03:02

In your opinion, what are examples of artistic films? {nm} goodvibe61 Oct 16, 09:56

my tastes run pretty classical, but in terms of releases this year: Leviathan, Force Majeur, Blue Ruin, Duke of Burgundy Moviesnob Oct 16, 10:56

Also the tribe, goodnight mommy, field in England, the look of silence. Some of these are our films of course {nm} Moviesnob Oct 16, 15:55

So what.. If a movie isn't artistic then it shouldn't be made? {nm} Dorfman Oct 16, 08:58

yes, exactly charlie Oct 16, 09:04

So lets just stop making comedies, horrors, and any other genre of movie that someone might not consider artistic.. Yeah that will fun.... {nm} Dorfman Oct 16, 09:12

Well, I think one could argue there is "art" in all of the best examples of those genres, but this is all very subjective {nm} numbersix_99 Oct 16, 09:52

Exactly it's objective. You just can't blanket a whole genre as not being artistic {nm} Dorfman Oct 16, 10:17

true. the original Superman and Superman II were actually great movies {nm} charlie Oct 16, 10:23

Wait. You don't think The Exorcist, Eyes Without A Face, or Doctor Stangelove are artistic? {nm} goodvibe61 Oct 16, 09:54

Oh I do.. I was being sarcastic in my statement about stop making comedies and horrors. {nm} Dorfman Oct 16, 10:17

Reductio Ad Absurdam Man to the rescue charlie Oct 16, 10:00

No; only the reasonable part of it. {nm} goodvibe61 Oct 16, 10:05

This guy sounds like a clown to me... MattW Oct 15, 19:46

LOL. {nm} goodvibe61 Oct 16, 09:55

both of them {nm} KingDrunk Oct 16, 16:08

Well, that's just like, your opinion, man. {nm} Bubba_Fett Oct 15, 19:53

The Winter Soldier is one example of a comic book movie that's grown-up and sophisticated and artistically a triumph. lesana Oct 16, 04:53

+1 {nm} Dorfman Oct 16, 09:01

"or has run out of the courage to invest in them"...I'd lean towards that...probably lots of younger generation staffers with ideas {nm} tealfan Oct 16, 09:07

It's not about courage, it's about money. There are plenty of people willing to take risks with, say, $20M of other people's money. RogerMore Oct 16, 10:05

That's what I do with 20 million of my HSX money. :) {nm} Dorfman Oct 16, 10:18

yes, they (thus far) have proved to be a mostly safe, winning bet, in hindsight. other safe bets: Gravity, Argo, American Hustle charlie Oct 16, 10:22

I'd rather see those movies too - but those are still riskier, and the studios took decisions to minimise the risks of failure. RogerMore Oct 16, 10:57

So wait.. Comic book movies aren't artistic but Ted is? {nm} Dorfman Oct 16, 11:29

It's not that sophisticated. {nm} goodvibe61 Oct 16, 09:57
