...I mean they're hiring the right above the line talent (David Fincher, Steven S, DeKnight, Wachowski's, Duplass Bros., Eli Roth, David Cross, etc...) the list goes on...Ā
It feels like they're providing approrpiate funding & packaging the right talent (writers, directors, showrunners, Dp's, talent) and not interfering with the creative visions of these proven and talented people. That sounds ideal, I don't know the payment structure of NetFlix (Backend deals, royalties, stipulations within their contracts or clauses within contract) but it seems favorable to the creatives to get a real budget, no studio interference, a global audience that spans over 57 millon viewers and growing....I don't know, I'm an outsider not an insider but aside from Marco Polo (DUD) I've been pretty happy with what NetFlix has been doing...If the MARVEL series contiues in the fashion DareDevil did, I think the comic book fanbase will be very loyal towards NetFlix & anticipate new releases...Now if your at a film festival NetFlix is amongst the execs on the prowl for content and their distribution is in place... PLUS don't forget Kevin Smith's correct rant at Sundance a while back when he was protesting these inflated expecation of returns when studios spend the movie budget again towards marketing and expect that double inflated budget in return, I don't see NetFlix experiences that problem - they spend on marketing of course but not to the same degree that the traditional studio system does (100M for production and another 100 towards marketing - that's insane)... If your a creative & you have a SVOD platform, with the size and resolutions and sound systems for your home becoming more and more afforadable, I don't think I'd be complaining because my audences isn't seeing my film in theatres...But NetFlix appears to be also theatrically distributing films on the big screen as well (JADOTVILLE) for instance and Beast of no Nations (i believe)... If your given the budget you need to render your vision & not get studio interferene and have global distribution in place & maybe sacrifice some backend but know that if you do a successful job (I'm sure NetFlix monitors reviews, likes, etc., associates with its in house title closely), I'm sure you can get another picture deal with them or a series of picture deals (Duplass Bros.)... I'm interested in reading your friends article... Looking forward to it... NetFlix isn't HBO yet, but I feel its getting there & there's also the convenience factor of having what you want at your fingertips...I'd still go to theatre to see a film meant to be seen in theatres or Imax (Interstellar, Wolf On Wall St., etc...)
