a small fraction of the overall population of the US and Canada. $200m translates to about 12.25m people, leaving plenty of space for other movies to find their audience. A movie like The Night Before was never going to open huge, regardless of what week it opened, but those who will want to see it will still go to see it, regardless of what else might be playing.

The market has proven so many times already that it can expand to fit multiple movies with high want to see factors coming out at the same time.

V: Sony has moved The Night Before [XMAS] forward five days to November 20 and will now face HGAM4 FabioParme Sep 29, 21:13

I don't understand... Why would they do that? Do they want the movie to bomb? {nm} Animal Sep 30, 02:58

They couldn't wait any longer for North Korea to get its act together {nm} RamsFan2004 Sep 30, 05:59

the problem with releasing a film over Thanksgiving is that the following two weeks are typically awful. Opening early, islander Sep 30, 06:04

Yeah but this is the final Hunger Games right?? {nm} Dorfman Sep 30, 06:34

either way, theres no good date with that and star wars, all the films might as well give it up til 2016 {nm} islander Sep 30, 06:41

Counter programming on xmas day could have worked especially with the plot {nm} RamsFan2004 Sep 30, 07:00

But after dec 26, who wants to see a Christmas movie? {nm} islander Sep 30, 07:08

Ukranian Christmas is January 07, 2016 with Jan. 07 - 14 being a Festive Week. Captain Obvious Sep 30, 07:13

With star wars in town, it's gonna be hard to open period {nm} RamsFan2004 Sep 30, 07:14

I don't think there's a lot of audience overlap between XMAS and HGAM4. And it's normal for Christmas movies to get a November release. RogerMore Sep 30, 08:01

Lots of adults like Hunger Games too. Think this is a mistake. MiyazakiFan Sep 30, 08:07

I think XMAS is aimed at a particular segment of the adult audience that is not so much into Hunger Games. RogerMore Sep 30, 08:31

I'd be part of that segment. Though I don't miss college, and I'm 37. lol {nm} Dorfman Sep 30, 14:16

Problem is, all the studios want to get "their" big movie out for the holidays, and it's always a crowded time... {nm} Flash Sep 30, 08:06
