their plan doesn't make sense...

Posted by: RHAWK (a.k.a RazorHawk) on Mar 11, 17:45 in response to Oleg Max's post they live in a dream world if they think average joe will...

The target audeience that they mention are older people with obligations that cannot attend the theater like parents with kids.

(So, they are targeting parents who cannot afford babysitters to pay $50 to see a movie?)

As part of their plan, they get two free movie tickets and exhibitors will make money on the concessions.

(I thought these parents couldn't get to the theater which was the whole purpose of this service... so now the idea is that parents who cannot afford a babysitter will pay $150 for the box and then $50 for a movie = $200 first movie and then they will get two tickets for a movie that they have already seen and somehow now afford a babysitter AND have money left over to spend on concessions?)

Another key component of this plan is that exhibitors get a large portion of the $50 per movie fee.  Which exhibitor?  If I buy a $50 movie, then where does that part of my money go?  To my local theater?  To my local theater chain?

I get two free tickets (to see the movie I already saw and already paid $50 for).  How do they determine what theater, what theater chain I use the tickets at?

Movie studios... they would need to have all of the major studios participate otherwise you would have 1 movie available this week but then you would have to wait 3 weeks until the next movie from participating studios is available?

Variety: The Screening Room $50 Day and Date Home Video has Steven Spielberg, JJ Abrams, Peter Jackson as backers. notfabio Mar 11, 16:18

Brian Grazer and Ron Howard as well, all are shareholders. {nm} notfabio Mar 11, 16:19

they live in a dream world if they think average joe will pay 50 bucks to watch a movie. people cut cable, and that costs 70-80 per month.. {nm} Oleg Max Mar 11, 17:11

you have to buy the $150 box first... then it is $50 per movie {nm} RHAWK Mar 11, 17:21

yeah. nuts. imagine paying 50 bucks for GRMSB :) Oleg Max Mar 11, 17:27

But it only takes one person to pirate the movie and it's out there in blu-ray quality {nm} RamsFan2004 Mar 11, 17:44

+100 {nm} RamsFan2004 Mar 11, 17:46

its not for ones who cant afford a babysitter. {nm} Moviesnob Mar 11, 18:30

In a previous article it said 10% to the screening room company, 20% to distributors and (as much as) $20 to exhibitors. MattW Mar 11, 23:29

It's easily $75 in tickets for a family of 5 to see a movie in Los Angeles on a Friday/Saturday evening and they do that. {nm} dsbman Mar 11, 18:24

or for parents who have to pay a babysitter & parking {nm} Moviesnob Mar 11, 18:28

I'll explain the logic, but its a lengthy answer and I'll go on record now as saying this will fail at a $50 price point Moviesnob Mar 11, 18:56

It is a decent idea, but why the need for a box, Amazon or Itunes FTW. It's 'anti piracy' but what stops someone from taping with a camera {nm} MarkDinse Mar 11, 20:38

It simply will not work. Just like with flagging NFL tickets, the same will continue for movies. A system needs to be created that... Willroast Mar 12, 01:04

Hmm...Might not have been clear with my comparison. NFL is fighting folks preferring to watch at home, cinema is too. {nm} Willroast Mar 12, 01:05

If they can make a deal with Disney, the traditional theatrical window will collapse forever {nm} Peterlee Mar 11, 17:17
