Like I said before--not only is Sony probably going to lose out on even worldwide gross, but there's profitable engines (Feig, etc.) at risk

Careers hit stumbleblocks, so the stars may suffer--but that's also a loss of consistency for the studio and lucrative first-look deals in the longterm. After this, how consistent of business models can you structure around Feig, McCarthy, Wiig, "Ghostbusters," female-driven big-budget features...what can you budget them at now? How do you market them? Definitely not like this. And how do you pitch it to stockholders and to social media now?

So fluffing the numbers overall and trying to squeeze every last bit of goodwill out of this bloody situation for Sony and Columbia Pictures really is in their best interest (especially since no one can really blame them, no matter how pitiful it may be at this point to still have their hands up. Captain America they ain't. They can not keep doing this all day).

I'm including the "Minority Report" story too, because that was trying to cover for embarassment from losing to "Lilo & Stitch" for No. 1.

Embarassment (or rather, pride) is a high-risk asset in Hollywood, more so nowadays when stockholders sweat at embarassment. Sweat literally costs stockholders money, see, because their suits are made of the finest imported threads, and the thread count suffers under the duress of the sweat-soaked material.

Ghostbusters - 46 mill {nm} RazorHawk Jul 17, 08:32

Yeah sure thing Sony. ::eagerly awaits seeing the 43 million actual number on Monday:: {nm} Hersheybar Jul 17, 08:57

Why do you think it will have a 40% Saturday to Sunday drop? shadowking Jul 17, 09:03

Front loaded female audience, inaccurate overall weekend estimates, media fluffing to soften the blow to the female stars, etc. {nm} chosenone2oo5 Jul 17, 09:53

Good luck with that {nm} shadowking Jul 17, 09:54

Do you remember "Transformers: Age of Extinction" had its Opening Weekend numbers bumped up because Paramount was embarrassed of <$100M? {nm} chosenone2oo5 Jul 17, 09:59

Nope, wasn't paying attention to box office at the time. A Google seach turns up nothing on the matter - care to provide a link? shadowking Jul 17, 10:08

Here ya go buddy. chosenone2oo5 Jul 17, 10:15

I was not expecting a link to a legit source, so thanks for that shadowking Jul 17, 10:29

Where it will really lose out is if it can't release in China, where Warcraft and Pacific Rim made up a lot of their domestic losses {nm} FranklynStreet Jul 17, 13:08

This news has already been posted on the Forum. It HAS BEEN denied release in China. Link inside. chosenone2oo5 Jul 17, 17:20

performed below expectations all wknd. 19m Friday became 17m, 18m Sat became 16m, 50+m became "46M" {nm} Fitch3k Jul 17, 11:55

From Thursday night estimates to this morning, "Ghostbusters (2016)" literally dropped $10M. Read the forums here for all that jazz. {nm} chosenone2oo5 Jul 17, 11:59

+1 {nm} chosenone2oo5 Jul 17, 09:52

+1 {nm} Fitch3k Jul 17, 11:54

With "Pets" strong and "Star Trek," and "Ice Age" opening. "Ghost" will far to 4th (Maybe 5th) next weekend... Ouch. {nm} VictorY Jul 17, 09:16

"Suicide Squad" will kill it too--women will abandon "Ghostbusters (2016)" for Harley Quinn, not to mention supporting her supervillainesses {nm} chosenone2oo5 Jul 17, 10:17

First older women will abandon it for Bad Moms in 2 weeks, teen girls and twenty something for Nerve. It's legs will be stumpy. Baron_Darcon Jul 17, 10:33

I FORGOT "Bad Moms!" That rips McCarthy & Wiigs's audience right out from under 'em! Wow! "Nerve" is still uncertain as to how high it'll go {nm} chosenone2oo5 Jul 17, 10:38

How could you forget Bad Moms - that's the best comedy trailer of the summer?:) TwoMisfits Jul 17, 10:50

Actually, Jon Lucas and Scott Moore are excellent writers--but this is only the 2nd time they've directed their material (since 21OVR, meh). chosenone2oo5 Jul 17, 11:23

Sidenote: I think it qualifies a flop since it set the franchise back a step--opened at 27.7% less than "Ghostbusters II" inflation-adjusted {nm} chosenone2oo5 Jul 17, 11:41

Speaking of franchises getting set back--also looks unlikely "Independence Day: Resurgence" will make a profit, thus unlikely for a sequel. {nm} chosenone2oo5 Jul 17, 11:56

The real question is going to be the adjust numbers, how will it preform? Like a Cinemascore B+, frontloaded action, typical MMCCA? Baron_Darcon Jul 17, 13:02

+1 on MMCCA taking a hit. "Bad Moms" is in DIRECT contention, as it's the exact same demographic that usually goes to her movies. {nm} chosenone2oo5 Jul 17, 17:23
