This is just silly. It will break $1b worldwide on a $150m budget. It is a massive success. Some points...

Posted by: numbersix_99 on Apr 03, 01:55 in response to VictorY's post Solid. But domestically its stuck on "Spider Man...

No sure why Spidey 3 is being used as a comp. But even so it has beaten its BO performance. And CM has beaten every Spiderman film since. So what's your point here?

CM will earn over $1b worldwide. That is a massive success and will make it the 7th highest earning MCU film. As a comparable it has also beaten Wonder Woman's global BO.

Where did Disney say they were expecting a $450m film? Studios tend to low-ball predictions and the only Disney prediction I remember seeing was a $100m opening.

You say other MCU films that opened above $150m have earned over $400m as some sort of comparable. But the other big MCU openers all opened well beyond that - the next biggest being Iron Man 3's $174m. Look at the ratio for a comparible. At worst CM will close at the $380m (assuming 50% drops which is unlikely) which is is 2.5 times its opening weekend, higher than Iron Man 3, Captain America 3, and Avengers 2.

On the above you try to move the goalposts to win your argument - that CM is the worst performing original MCU film. But these characters are so obviously tied into the franchise that you're comparing apples and oranges. What a film like CM is now is not the same as Iron Man, when few outside the comic book world understood what a cinematic universe was. So of course this is going to have a different IM. Compariing it to Black Panther doesn't work, as in every way that film was an exception. And you could compare every other non-avengers MCU film to Black Panther and it would be deemed a disappointment.

Stop making arbitrary comparisons to find some sort of failure in a film that has earned a significant profit from its theatrical release alone. Not many films do this. Not many films earn over $1b (CM is in the all time Top 40 wordwide, unadjusted). Your only point seems to be its final tally to opening weekend ratio, which as shown above is stronger than other MCU films, which you don't deem as disappointments or failures. Turning your eye to the undeniable success of this movie (which, BTW, I haven't seen and probably won't) only demonstrates some sort of bias against it, for reasons beyond the data.

Captain Marvel will cross $1b worldwide this week professor zovek Apr 02, 13:38

Solid. But domestically its stuck on "Spider Man 3" territory and will struggle to break 400 million. {nm} VictorY Apr 02, 15:10

That's just your own artificial "recrod". {nm} Antibody Apr 02, 15:16

*record {nm} Antibody Apr 02, 15:16

Actually Disney was hoping for 450 domestic (off the opening) which is definitely not happening. {nm} VictorY Apr 02, 16:59

Says who? CMARV has better legs than IRNM2, IRNM3, CAPA3, AVNG2, GOTG2... {nm} Antibody Apr 02, 17:07

It will struggle to catch the final domestic totals of many of those. CM had a huge opening, so Disney was thinking 3X mtp like other Mavels {nm} VictorY Apr 02, 17:12

IRNM2, IRNM3, CAPA3, GOTG2, AVNG2 and not even AVNG3 made 3X opening. {nm} Antibody Apr 02, 17:15

But "Black Panther" did, which was the last solo new Marvel film. {nm} VictorY Apr 02, 17:22

So now you've further moved the goalpost to BPNTH, which no other MCU has matched either. {nm} Antibody Apr 02, 17:28

If look the new Marvel solo films. Most have done 3X multiplier domestic in their first films. Disney wasn't crazy to think it would happen. {nm} VictorY Apr 02, 18:09

CMARV has the second highest opening for a Marvel solo film. Disney is very happy. {nm} Antibody Apr 02, 18:23

The opening doesn't mean much if its front-loaded. The last solo Marvel film not to do 3X (I believe) was the Norton Hulk movie. {nm} VictorY Apr 02, 18:31

Wrong. Spider-Man: Homecoming, DRSTR, THOR and CAPAM didn't do 3X. {nm} Antibody Apr 02, 18:42

But pretty darn close. CM is looking at 2.5 or 6 multiplier in comparison. {nm} VictorY Apr 02, 18:45

Again, CMARV has made more than $1 Billion worldwide. Only an idiot would argue that it's a failure. {nm} Antibody Apr 02, 18:52

SM3 made close to 900 million world-wide, and then changes were made. Just being honest. {nm} VictorY Apr 02, 18:55

Disney is not making any changes. Captain Marvel will be in CMARV2, AVNG5...etc. {nm} Antibody Apr 02, 18:59

Spider-Man 3 made 336 million. CM is at 353 million & opening weekend was basically the same jamesbik333 Apr 02, 15:27

To clarify: SM3 was the only other Marvel film to open 150+ miilion and not break 400 million domestic. {nm} VictorY Apr 02, 17:01

So random. {nm} Antibody Apr 02, 17:08

I'll make one up: SM3 is the only other Marvel film to open 150+ miilion and not break $350M. CMARV broke $350M! {nm} Antibody Apr 02, 17:11

Nice. However beating SM3 dosen't scream franchise strength either. Matching the other Marvel film final domestic runs would have. {nm} VictorY Apr 02, 17:14

You're the one who made up a random comparison to SPID3. {nm} Antibody Apr 02, 17:17

Actually. SM3 was polarizing to fans also. {nm} VictorY Apr 02, 17:21

CMARV is only divisive for a small minority of male trolls. {nm} Antibody Apr 02, 17:26

... who were polarized against it long before release. Most probably never even saw it. {nm} BSmurf Apr 02, 17:51

SM3 had a budget of 258m, at the time an industry record. CM cost 100m LESS & will gross around 200m MORE. And its not the end of a trilogy. HurricaneKid Apr 02, 21:16

SM3 was the 3rd film in it's series, and had the previous 2 to live up to. CM is the first CM movie. It's performing just fine. {nm} sir_writer Apr 03, 06:10

Black Panther was still reporting box office 6 months after its opening. Disney could keep Captain Marvel in theaters as long as it takes professor zovek Apr 02, 17:15

It doesn't have legs like BP did. That won't happen. It doesn't have "Wonder Woman" legs either. {nm} VictorY Apr 02, 17:20

The other MCU films which opened above $150 all opened over $174m. CM's IM will be higher than IM3, CA3, and Avengers 2 {nm} numbersix_99 Apr 03, 01:57

So when it breaks $400M domestically, will you finally give this a rest? {nm} benz0 Apr 02, 16:00

This is just silly. It will break $1b worldwide on a $150m budget. It is a massive success. Some points... numbersix_99 Apr 03, 01:55

it's currently ahead of Wonder Woman domestically...wish BOM would o a showdown {nm} tealfan Apr 02, 17:21

*do {nm} tealfan Apr 02, 17:21

WW made $94.45M after it's 4th weekend, with GREAT holds. CM will need to make more to reach $450, but the Avengers is coming...{nm} Decoman Apr 03, 11:03

Get your jousting with VictorY in while you can . . . before he and guys like him are replaced {nm} SenJohnBlutarsky Apr 02, 22:24
