Masks work. Social distancing works. I understand that there are cities/markets still with numbers out of control, but that's not everywhere. I live in Jacksonville, FL where our death rate per 1M (the only true way to compare states and cities along with cases/1M) is one of the lowest in the state. So I'm certainly more comfortable being in public than others in other cities/states. And I still wear my mask whenever I am in an indoor public space to help protect both myself and other people. That's just being safe and smart.
AMC just opened its doors last week. I've been a member of the Stubs A-List program since it started, and as soon as AMC announced their re-opening I began tracking ticket sales via their app to gauge the seating and attendance situations to make an informed decision. My plan was to completely avoid weekends and busy evenings, and only go when crowds are small. AMC appears to have excellent social distancing measures in place such as blocking all immediate-surrounding seats from those purchased, capping total seating at 30% capacity, hand sanitizers everywhere, and mandatory mask wearing WHILE watching the movie (aside from eating and drinking). Though I do wish they went one step further and perform temperature checks when entering.
AMC is currently showing older classic films to try to get butts back into the seats while the studios slowly release new movies, and I just went this past Tuesday at 5pm to see the 10th anniversary showing of Inception in IMAX. You know how many other people were there? ZERO. I literally had an entire IMAX auditorium to myself. And I still wore my paper surgical mask the entire time bc I don't mind wearing it. Not exactly sure how I'm risking my own health going to see a movie with literally no one else in the auditorium.
I do not buy the argument that EVERY person needs to stay home and EVERY business (including theaters) needs to shut down until this is all over. Every decision needs to be on a state-by-state, city-by-city, case-by-case basis. It can't be one-size-fits-all.
Last night I went back to AMC to see The New Mutants, and while there were perhaps 50 people in the auditorium, everyone was distanced and everyone (that I could see) was compliant and wearing masks. I now have my ticket to go see an advance screening of Tenet next Tuesday, and with multiple positive experiences this past week I have no worries about a return visit. And if I do see something going on that concerns me, I'll get up and leave. But what I'm not going to do is be paranoid and isolate myself living in fear. I'm going to be as safe as I can be and still try to enjoy life.
