Yes its a cliche. Pt is the cliche isn't working (as well) for most movies now (vs recent past) so why did it for the few (incl TG2) it did?

Maybe the star (TCRUI) manages his PR better?
eg Dwayne Johnson rode the crest of a great PR wave for many years (back in 2014/5 even hinted at a run for Presidency in 2020) with his movies performing better than expected (& perhaps than they deserved) & is now facing the normalcy of other stars in a business that Disney (amongst others) engineered away from star names headlining the movie to the superhero/role/IP being the main thing.

HFORD, ASCHW, SSTAL etc weren't just popular with their original audience generation (late 70s/early 80s) but with the next one too (90s/early 00s). None of them can pull in today's younger audience (3rd gen for them) on their star power even with a sequel to something they were popular for (Expendables, Rocky etc). In fact by that standard INDI5 will do ~$140-150m at the BO which would be good (barring the way expectations were set) but it was backed by heavy duty Production houses/$90m+ A&M spends & got a stupendously wide release the 2nd biggest holiday weekend of the year. You could say this is still TCRUI's 2nd gen audience (almost the end of it) but even then the fact that each of his IPs BO are trending up with sequels (why he's trying to do more sequels) is something unique in the 21st century.

Maybe in 5 years his time will be over too. Maybe he's the last truly (global) mega movie star & in future the title will be the only star (we've been there before so it could be the cycle is at one end, we don't know). TG2 mystified in terms of extremeness of its BO/popularity given every comparison right now, not in terms of what the movie was (a slick rehash of its predeccesor with a passing of the baton).

JATINDER: From early looks of it, $19M SAT for #IndianaJones . 2 days total of $43M. Weekend expected to be around $57.5-58. (630pm Sat PST) notfabio Jul 01, 18:32

D+ Day is likely in early September I'd expect them to hold it to then ala THOR4. (July 8th - September 8th in that example) {nm} notfabio Jul 01, 19:01

GOTG3 physical media date is August 1st which I anticipate will also be the D+ date. {nm} notfabio Jul 01, 19:04

TOP GUN 2 continues to mystify {nm} Moviesnob Jul 01, 19:07

No matter what it does but had way better reviews, no divisive sequel, significantly less competition and a lead who doesn't need CGI notfabio Jul 01, 19:22

Remind me how many people picked TOP GUN #1 last summer {nm} Moviesnob Jul 02, 11:36

Heroic character allowed to be heroic, man allowed to be competent and masculine, young men repeatedly go see it, a wonder for the ages {nm} Fitch3k Jul 01, 23:10

Literally the exact opposite happen. The longer it played the more women went to see it {nm} Moviesnob Jul 02, 11:37

So women like strong male characters too? Good. Time to bring them back and end this incompetent male + hyper aggressive female experiment {nm} Fitch3k Jul 02, 13:26

yikes x2 {nm} Moviesnob Jul 02, 13:41

fo what its worth i grew up with indy and owned the vhs sneak Jul 02, 04:15

The nostalgia for more Indiana Jones already happened in 2008. {nm} Antibody Jul 02, 08:30

and nobody was particularly nostalgic for it then, even before it turned out meh {nm} my mate paul Jul 02, 12:50

so will INDY5 2nd weekend be worse than FLASH? I think INDY5 will be on fumes too next weekend worse than FLASH. {nm} Baron_Darcon2017 Jul 01, 22:59

Most of the main movie goers were not even born when INDI1 came out, have no history with the movie = less interest. {nm} Flash Jul 02, 07:42

Same could be said for Top Gun, only 5 years younger. {nm} Antibody Jul 02, 08:50

It will be interesting to see how M:I plays out. $290 million budget & last one did $220 in US. jonjon Jul 02, 10:22

studios have mostly come to Jesus on streaming alone being an unsustainable model. not sure they’re in the same place yet on collapsing the my mate paul Jul 02, 13:55

still a work in progress but we'll hopefully get there {nm} Moviesnob Jul 02, 14:02
