Using a stock market analogy

Posted by: xiayun on Nov 19, 18:05 in response to lobogotti's post some concerns about the new halting time...

The stock market doesn't open on weekend, and if any news break out, even as big as say Lehman's collapse, everybody will still have weekend to enjoy and not worry about trading, knowing any damage will be reflected on Monday when trading window opens.  The new HSX change will definitely make Friday and Saturday a lot more active, but I don't know if it's a good thing as most will want to have a day or two away from computer each week to enjoy other things, the same time, still be regarded as valuable HSX traders and find fun here.

some concerns about the new halting time... lobogotti Nov 19, 16:57

you could *pretend* that the halt time is the same and make your final trades before then and hold them for adjust RazorHawk Nov 19, 17:04

everyone will be privy to the Friday numbers, which will result in everyone holding it the same way. no more mixed bag where some succeed lobogotti Nov 19, 17:08

that's only a negative if you are looking at it like a competition {nm} lapuckfan Nov 19, 17:14

if competition means nothing then why are there rankings? why are there gut checks? i truly am not that competitive about the game lobogotti Nov 19, 17:19

It is a competition. In this game you compete against yourself. That's the fun {nm} mrbeankc Nov 19, 17:51

agreed. {nm} lobogotti Nov 19, 17:51

here's a good example... lobogotti Nov 19, 17:15

how do the people who short make money in that example? {nm} RazorHawk Nov 19, 17:27

The stock won't be halted. They can flip to long when then numbers come out. {nm} shadowking Nov 19, 17:30

The fun of HSX is predicting the results not just reacting to them when they are released. The new halt time removes that challenge {nm} mrbeankc Nov 19, 18:01

they would flip to long with the people who had it correct to begin with. everyone crosses the finish at the same time...in 1st a place tie {nm} lobogotti Nov 19, 17:36

not everyone, but those who react early; it'll be a race to get the first numbers and flip (for those who were wrong on Fri morning) xiayun Nov 19, 17:44

another good point to consider. this is favoring sleep deprivation over skilled/researching abilities. and most will get to the finish lobogotti Nov 19, 17:48

BINGO! but then again I'm up for reset. And I'm very fast at doing math in my head. The downside is grtting the info late, but most of the Vashta Nerada Nov 19, 18:04

Agreed. HSX has always been about predicting box office. In my mind this is simply dumbing down the game. {nm} mrbeankc Nov 19, 18:10

You still get your money Sunday morning, unless you cash out before the halt. This is a bad example, the real change isn't that you are Vashta Nerada Nov 19, 17:53

i guess i'm not following how it is a bad example. how about this... lobogotti Nov 19, 18:13

Agreed. What's the point of halting now for only 15 hours. People will already have a general idea of what the totlas will be at that point {nm} mrbeankc Nov 19, 18:17

This be comes a case of The Quick or the Dead. With the old system everybody was in the same boat come Sunday. Have fun sleeping Friday Vashta Nerada Nov 19, 17:21

In my mind the fun of the game is deciding long or short before the film opens. Now it's just a matter of being online when the Friday mrbeankc Nov 19, 17:50

This is exactly how I feel... It's fun to gamble a bit, and big wins and big losses are what make the game interesting. {nm} Chefbobcat Nov 19, 21:49

Because there's no risk when you can trade after knowing Friday #s and there's no real reason to halt for 18 hours. {nm} secretstalker Nov 19, 20:37

I share your concern on this point for the same reasons- if a change to halt time is going to happen how about Midnight on Sat ? MAlbi Nov 19, 17:33

exactly....i would say max Friday, 6pm PAC...but I like the halt how it is personally. {nm} lobogotti Nov 19, 17:38

err..PST {nm} lobogotti Nov 19, 17:51

Remember that the halt time use to be in the evening years ago but was moved up because people were getting early BO results on Fridays mrbeankc Nov 19, 18:14

I don't like it either. I'm good with all the changes but this I really dislike. {nm} mrbeankc Nov 19, 17:43

another really cool bonus about the 75K limit is that if you were correct on the openers you were REALLY correct. last week i was 3/3.... lobogotti Nov 19, 17:50

And if you're wrong you're really wrong. That is also part of the fun. You make your call and you live or die by it. {nm} mrbeankc Nov 19, 18:18

Using a stock market analogy xiayun Nov 19, 18:05

this! if the goal is to be more similar to a real market the halt should remain on friday...maybe mirror the NYSE close of 4pm EST {nm} lapuckfan Nov 19, 22:04

decreased/no halt time means... bigefred Nov 19, 18:46

And a lot of people refreshing Nikki's page during the weekend, over and over. {nm} Chefbobcat Nov 19, 23:49

halting on friday am means people have to guess the weekend BO before getting any BO data. Delaying the halt to Saturday removes this extepan Nov 19, 23:50
