Your sentiment of "preventing them from bettering themselves" is so insensitive.  Perhaps you should talk to an adult working in McDonalds, etc., to find out what kind of life choices have them working there. (I do not mean managers.)

I have a client who was a chemical engineer in India, and because his credentials are not accepted, he is a manager of a chain drug store.  People make choices to get by.  Don't be so judgemental.
