For an adult to expect that a minimum wage entry-level job to provide a living-wage income is simply not realistic.
It is not dishonorable to do what you have to do to get by. My point is that while you are in this type of job, you CAN do things to make yourself a more attractive candidate for a job that can provide a compfortable living.
With the kind of employee turnover these businesses have, it's clear that even the employees don't believe it's a permanent kind of job.
I've worked fast food - as a teenager. I've worked manufacturing (low and high tech), retail sales, farm labor, and other jobs (both white and blue collar) in the past 25 years. I'm well aware of the advantages and drawbacks to a variety of jobs.
In each and every one of these jobs, I (and all the other employees) was at the mercy of management and routinely got screwed over, even by very large Fortune 500 companies. ALL employees serve at the whim of the company (unless you're self-employed). For one high-tech company I worked for for 12 years, my entire crew was forced onto graveyard shift, which negatively affected 100s of peoples' lives. It happens, and the company gave us a "take it or leave it" option regarding our jobs. It can happen at any level. The main difference is that we were being paid about 4x minimum wage, so quitting over that was not a decision to be taken lightly.Ā
Having to work crappy (or undesirable) hours is par for the course in the fast food world. It's the nature of the beast, and every employee signs on for that possibility by accepting the job offer.
