Hello BrendanD (and friends) to HSX. Be careful, some players have had so much fun playing this game that they have labeled it as being addicting!
I am just another player trying to help you out.
The basic question that you are asking is the core of what HSX is about and how it is a game and how to play that game and I could type forever explaining everything to you, but here are some basics you are looking for to get you started down the right path.
Moviestock prices are based on how much box office HSX players think a movie will make in its first 4 weekends of wide release.
$1 price = $1mill in box office.
Players are just guessing and estimating prices based on cast, director, release date, genre, comparable movies performance, recent box office trends, theater counts, etc... until we get closer to release.
Once a movie is released there are two price adjustments. Opening weekend box office is estimated on Sundays (for normal non holiday weekends) and moviestock prices are 'adjusted' on Sunday mornings using this formula
Opening Weekend Box Office * 2.7 = Adjusted Price
HSX has calculated that on average movies make 2.7 times their opening weekend box office within the movies first 4 weekends of release.
An example would be something like if the next superhero movie made $100mill its first weekend then HSX estimates that
Weekend 1 = $100mill
Weekend 2 = $75mill
Weekend 3 = $50mill
Weekend 4 = $25mill
= $250mill after 4 weekends (and maybe $270mill total when including the weekdays)
$100mill opening weekend * 2.7 = $270mill
On opening weekend HSX 'adjusts' prices to correct the prices based on box office. If the players had invested so the latest superhero moviestock was priced at $400, but it only did $100 opening weekend, we know from history and from using the math above that $400mill in 4 weekends would be almost impossible (very very unlikely).
Prices for moviestocks that are opening wide are 'halted' (prices are frozen and trading is suspended) on Saturday nights and the weeekend numbers are revealed on Sunday mornings and the 'price adjusts' that you are asking about are performed. Players who are estimating in the correct direction make money and players who are estimating in the wrong direction lose money. This is one of the main ways of making money in the game.
Once the opening weekend price adjusts are done, then there is a second part of the game called 'post adjust'. HSX has estimated mathmatically that movies usually average 2.7 times their opening weekend box office within their first 4 weekends. Post adjust is investing from the time of weekend adjust until the time the moviestock cashes out after its 4 weekends. Will it make the 2.7 times? Will it have a better 'multiplier'? Will it have a worse multiplier?
Cartoons and childrens movies usually have a better multiplier because parents aren't always in a rush to take thier kids on opening weekend and many times will end up taking them during the weekday afternoons after school.
Horror movies are usually 'frontloaded' and have a worse multiplier because most people who are interested in the movie rush to see it on opening weekend so nobody spoils the movie for them.
The price adjustments for moviestocks are checkpoints that correct the current moviestock price and change it to match the current box office.
American Ultra is opening wide next weekend. It is currently priced at ~$33 which means that currently HSX players are expecting it to do ($33 divided by 2.7) ~$12mill for its opening weekend. If you think it will do that amount or more then you would invest ('buy') that moviestock for its weekend adjust. If you think it will do below 12mill on its opening weekend then you would invest ('short') that moviestock for its weekend adjust. Let's imagine that it did 14mill opening weekend. When the weekend adjust happens you would make a profit if you invested 'long' (same as 'buy') or you would lose money if you had invested 'short'
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Starbonds operate and adjust differently.
After each movie has been released and then delisted after 4 weekends, all of the starbonds attached to the weeks delisted movies are price adjusted.
Starbonds 'TAG' is an average of the box office of their last 5 movies. If starbond XYZ last 5 movies made 100mill; 200mill; 100mill; 50 mill and 75mill then their TAG (worth) would be $105 (5 amounts of box office divided by 5).
Investors make money from starbonds by estimating their upcoming price adjusts (price correction). If starbond XYZ stars next in an indie movie that only makes 5mill, then their last 5 movie box office would change to 200mill; 100mill; 50mill; 75mill and 5mill and their new TAG (worth) would be price adjusted to $86 (5 most recent movie box office divided by 5). Players see this and know the price will be adjusted (corrected) down to $86 and make money by investing short in that starbond. Basically this starbond dropped a 100mill movie and added a 5mill movie to their average.
You can look on the HSX Calendar and see which starbonds are adjusting each week. On normal non holiday weeks, starbonds are adjusted on Tuesdays.
Example: Starbond ABC has a TAG that includes 25mill; 50mill; 100mill; 25mill and 10mill = $42 TAG (worth). If their next movie is a Disney movie that makes $150mill, then they would be dropping their 25mill project and adding a 150mill and they would 'adjust' to a new TAG containing 50mill; 100mill; 25mill; 10mill and 150mill and their TAG (worth) would change (adjust) to $67. Whatever the current trading price is, the Starbond will be adjusting to $67 and you can make money by investing correctly.
Miles Teller is starring in Fantastic Four. HSX Players thought that the movie would end up making a certain amount of box office and they used that amount to calculate an estimate of what he would adjust to (his new TAG). Fantastic Four did horrible and did way less than players were estimating so they had to calculate a new estimate for his adjust using new lower numbers and maybe now have to change they way they are investing in that Starbond.
Sometimes players are invested long ('buy') in a Starbond because Star Wars is their next price adjust, but then an indie movie is suddenly announced that that Starbond is attached to and will release and delist before Star Wars. Instead of price adjusting for a huge movie like Star Wars, now they will be price adjusiting for a very small movie and players will likely need to change the way they are investing in that Starbond.
This is just the basics of how the price adjustments work and why we have them.
As I said I could type forever because there is so much to learn...
exceptions; strategies; thingys that help us to decide how to invest; tools that help us decide how to invest; which websites to pay attention to (which ones not to pay attention to), etc...
HSX has a board (forum) called Playing & Trading Strategy where newer players can post questions (even basic or stupid ones) about the game, strategies, etc and get answers from other players. You can also read questions that have already been asked and answered.
There are also some leagues (player clubs/groups) that are focused on helping newer players learn the game and/or answer questions.
Good Luck... hope you end up having fun!
