With three new wide releases underperforming at the box office, Dr. Seuss' The Lorax [LORAX] repeated at the top with an estimated $39.1 million. The animated environmental tale declined 44% in its second weekend, bringing its total gross to $122.0 million.
The $250 million sci-fi epic John Carter [OMARS] opened in second place with just $30.6 million. The century old character bombed with young moviegoers and appealed primarily to older guys as its audience were 65% male and 60% over the age of 25.
The found footage comedy Project X [PROJX] finished third dropping 45% to $11.6 million.
The found footage horror Silent House [SILNH] debuted at the fourth spot with $7.0 million. However, viewers hated the film grading it 'F' on CinemaScore.
Dusted off the shelf after four years, A Thousand Words [TWRDS] grossed $6.4 million to open sixth overall. The comedy attracted a crowd that was 55% females and 61% over the age of 25.
