12 years after Spider-Man became the first film to break $100 million, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 [SPID5] returns to the same weekend with the same aspiration. However, much has changed in between not just for Spidey, but in the now crowded superhero genre. Sony rebooted the franchise with 2012’s The Amazing Spider-Man as Andrew Garfield [AGARF] and director Marc Webb [MWEBB] took over for Tobey Maguire and Sam Raimi. The film was generally well-received, but still grossed the least out of the four Spider-Man films. Now the PG-13 rated sequel has loaded up on villains. While Electro and Rhino are new to the film series, the Osborns' Green Goblin(s) have already been done in the first trilogy. Fans that felt another origin story was unnecessary will surely feel the same about another rehash for its sequel. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 opened internationally two weeks ago, and the reviews have been mixed. While trackings point to a $95 million plus opening, advance tickets sales do not indicate the same level of interest as Captain America: The Winter Soldier, which opened to $95 million just a month ago. Franchise fatigue may set for older fans, and the family audience may not pick up all the slack. Swinging into 4324 theaters, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 may capture $90 million.
The comedy The Other Woman [OTHRW] connected with its older female demographic, the quadrant least likely to be interested in the webcrawler. The Other Woman may decline 40% in its second weekend and collect $15 million.
With its distinct audience, Heaven is for Real [HVNFR] should be unaffected by the webslinger. The faith-based drama should hold on to third place at $9 million.
Fourth place figures to be a battle between Captain America: The Winter Soldier [CAPA2] and Rio 2 [RIO2] with both around $8 million.
That’s the whisper from the virtual trading floor.
