Though it did not soar as high as the Harry Potter films, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them [FBST2] met industry expectations with an estimated $75.0 million to lead the weekend box office. The spinoff didn't appeal to new fans as much as older fans as only 18% of the audience was under the age of 18 while 65% was over the age of 25.
After its 2 week reign, Doctor Strange [DRSTR] took second with $17.7 million. The superhero stands at $181.5 million. Trolls [TROLL] finished third at $17.5 million, bringing its total to $118.5 million.
Arrival [SOYLF] dropped 51% in its second weekend to $11.8 million and fourth, while Almost Christmas [MEYER] lost 54% to $7.0 million and fifth overall.
The Edge of Seventeen [BESTI] debuted in seventh place with $4.8 million. The teen comedy skewed female at 70%.
Bleed for This [BLDFT] placed eighth with a $2.4 million opening round. The drama drew 64% males and 69% over 25.
Expanding to 650 theaters, Moonlight [MONLT] charted at eleventh with $1.6 million.
Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk [BLLHW] bombed with just $0.9 million in its wide expansion.
