Warner Bros. capitalized on the 3D craze by converting the fantasy remake Clash of the Titans [CLASH] into an estimated $61.4 million opening weekend and $64.1 million including Thursday night screenings. 3D screens and their higher ticket prices accounted for more than 50% of the box office. However, the conversion appears short-sighted as reactions to the 3D version have been largely unfavorable. With grosses already declining from Friday to Saturday, Clash looks to have a steep drop-off next weekend.
Lionsgate's Why Did I Get Married Too [WDIG2] debuted in second place with a strong $30.15 million. The opening is the second best for Tyler Perry [TPERR] behind Madea Goes To Jail's $41 million, though his films tend to be front-loaded by an ardent fanbase.
Despite the arrival of a 3D competitor, How to Train Your Dragon [HTRYD] burned off just 33% in its second weekend to $29.2 million. The animated film has banked $92.3 million.
Miley Cyrus [MCYRU] opened The Last Song [LSONG] fourth overall at $16.2 million. The Disney teen romance has $25.6 million since opening on Wednesday.
