Avatar paving the way for 3D televisions [AVATR]

According to the linked article, 20th Century Fox and James Cameron have agreed to use Avatar [AVATR] to promote 3-D television sales.  Here's the article:

Do we have any experts that can explain the difference between a normal TV and a 3-D TV?  Is there a difference at all?
