There are or were 3D monitors manufactured by Sharp and by Philips that use lenticular liquid crystal displays to maintain the separate left eye/right eye images and do not require wearing the glasses, but the first of these units reduced the video resolution and limited the viewing angle. Panasonic is obviously looking at preserving a wide viewing angle that does not require sitting directly in front of the screen to get the 3D effect, so glasses are used to accomplish this with their product.
