It's the refresh rate.  Film is 24 frames per second ie a refresh rate of 24 hertz.  Video runs at 30 or 60 hz, depending on the source.  Stereoscopic 3D uses essentially 2 frames per each regular/native frame, one for each eye.  Most displays can't run a fast enough refresh rate, so that's the main difference.  Ideally, the 3D ready displays would have a standardized connection (ie. HDMI 1.4) but they probably don't, yet
