Movies

Flight (A-), Les Miserables (C+), Django Unchained (stupid decision on my part, F-)

My thoughts on each one, briefly:

Flight: The main characters were very well portrayed. It made me really feel for them and in a way identify with them somehow. I was rooting for them to get through everything ok all through the movie, which is great when you can manage to achieve that in a movie. The big "reveal" at the end actually made me break down and cry. Washington nailed that character and definitely deserves his nomination.

Les Miserables: The movie is too much of an emotional rollercoaster. The music pulls you one way emotionally then forcefully pulls you back the other way, not giving you enough time to deal with your emotions from the previous musical number and the drama unfolding at that particular point in time in the movie. When I left the theatre I was in emotional turmoil from the rollercoaster and it brought me down for the rest of the day. Hathaway does NOT deserve an Oscar for that performance. The movie itself doesn't warrant any Oscar attention at all. It's mediocre at best.

Django Unchained: My first (and last) Tarantino flick. Never again will I watch another. Absolutely woeful. Gore only for the sake of gore, way way way way way way way too many N and F-bombs, a wafer-thin plot, barely any character development at all, and Christoph Waltz does NOT deserve his nomination. I went into the movie expecting at least something decent, but never once actually became remotely interested in the story or emotionally invested in any of the characters, and for me to say that is a pretty bad thing. I would definitely have preferred Looper to get the Original Screenplay nod than this turd.

So who saw what this week? Rashomon (1950, A+), Joint Security Area (2000, A; a terrific last shot), Oldboy (2003; A+) {nm} islander s.i. #9 Jan 29, 09:01
