...the "stylized violence" in the film served no purpose to me other than to take my mind completely out of the story and remind me constantly that I was watching a movie. I couldn't focus on the actual story, there was too much absurdity in there, not least the violence. I couldn't take anything in there seriously, not even the actual violence towards the slaves (which from what I understand he tried to make that the "serious" part of an otherwise ridiculous movie) or his failed attempts to "humanise" some of the antagonists. His humour seemed quite forced a lot of the time, as if he needed to have jokes in certain scenes and he did whatever it took to make something into a joke in that scene. I could tell that he did a lot of research into slavery before he actually made the film, but the final outcome robs that fact of any redeeming qualities whatsoever that the movie might have otherwise had. I truly walked away from the movie with the only thought in my brain at the time being "What a complete waste of time." As I said before, the depths of his characters in the story are painfully thin, and the way the movie progresses doesn't allow you to actually invest emotionally in their development. There are too many distractions. A truly great movie of this kind keeps its tongue firmly in cheek and yet still allows you to become emotionally involved in the story and development of its main characters. This story did neither. It actually felt like it was only hastily thrown together with a small string of a plot to keep everything together, hence my terrible grade.

So who saw what this week? Rashomon (1950, A+), Joint Security Area (2000, A; a terrific last shot), Oldboy (2003; A+) {nm} islander s.i. #9 Jan 29, 09:01
