You mentioned in your first post that this was the first Tarantino film you'd seen. I'm guessing you won't be buying any retrospective box-sets anytime soon :) , but this kind and extent of movie violence is a regular feature of his work. I'm not sure what you'll make of the comparison, but my sense is that (sometimes) the violence is almost a kind of dance, and in composing gun-battle or martial-art battle scenes, Tarantino aims to top previous scenes. There is a one-against-eighty-eight scene near the end of "Kill Bill, vol. 1" which is like this. Then there are scenes of horrific violence in "Reservoir Dogs."

I think the best scene in the film is the "negotiations over dinner" scene. I recognize or accept the imbalances of the gun-battle that follows, but it's neither a plus nor a minus for me.
